Boat & Water Safety Tips

Boat & Water Safety Tips

COCOA, Flor. – Memorial Day weekend is upon us and that likely means celebrations with family and friends to kick off the unofficial start of summer. If the weather is nice, you might be hitting the beach or jumping on the boat, but we want to make sure that you stay safe throughout the weekend so take a minute to review these Boat & Water Safety Tips before your celebrations get underway!

Boat & Water Safety Tips

When it comes to boating, aside from educating yourself through a boater education course, there are a few quick tips that can help you ensure a safe weekend on the water.

-Lifejackets are a must, ALWAYS! Make sure you have extra lifejackets onboard as well.

-Avoid alcohol. The chances of being killed in a boating accident DOUBLE when alcohol is involved!

-Exercise additional caution when it comes to personal watercraft like jet skis, and make sure to always maintain a 50-ft. distance between other personal watercraft, vessels, swimmers, shore, etc.

-Operate at safe speeds, especially in crowded areas. It is also helpful to have another person on board who knows how to operate the boat and can help you keep a lookout.

-Check the weather. Make sure to research the weather for your route and always keep an eye out for darkening clouds, rough changing winds, or sudden drops in temperature to avoid getting caught in a storm or dangerous conditions.

Whether you're on the boat or at the beach it's also important to exercise safe water practices to prevent any accidents from occurring during your Memorial Day celebration.

-Teaching children how to swim at a young age is of utmost importance, but if they don't know how to swim make sure to utilize the appropriate flotation devices and stress the importance of water safety.

-While everyone will be excited to socialize, make sure to appoint a 'designated watcher' to monitor the children and keep an eye out for any potentially dangerous situations. If you have a babysitter, make sure to brief them on water safety and the importance of constant supervision.

-Learning to perform CPR can be crucial in the unfortunate event that something does happen. Keeping CPR instructions near the pool can be extremely helpful.

-Last but not least, don't think that you will hear a child who's in trouble in the water, so make sure to keep constant supervision over children near water to prevent a devastating situation.

While there is much more that goes into practicing boat and water safety, we hope these tips remind you the importance of exercising safety precautions over Memorial Day weekend. And of course, we hope you have a wonderful weekend!
